BRACHIAL DERMOLIPECTOMY
The posterior part of the arms is an area usually little exercised, then there is the tendency to accumulate fat, associated with flabbiness, and muscular loss. Those alterations affect mainly women starting from age 45. The practice of regular exercises directed to the muscles of this area greatly improve the aesthetic aspect of the arms, however, if the flabbiness is already in a very high degree, the alternative is plastic surgery of the arms to improve the appearance of this area which so much inconveniences most women. The arm plastic surgery receives the name of brachial dermolipectomy or brachialplasty. It is a surgery in which the relationship cost-benefit should be evaluated. In other words, if the person is inconvenienced with the unsightly aspect of the arms, she should decide if she should undergo the surgery, knowing that she is changing the flabbiness for a scar in a relatively apparent area. Although the scar is intended to be in the internal part, it will always appear when lifting the arms. For a person who has fat arms, without flabbiness and is still young, the best indication is liposuction, because the retraction of the skin in youth is good. Liposuction however, is not indicated for elderly people because the removal of the fat will increase the flabbiness of the skin. In this surgery, in simpler situations, the removal of the skin can be made through an incision only in the armpit. When there is more excess of flabbiness, the scar goes from the armpit to the elbow, on the internal side of the arm. Both the liposuction and the braquioplasty may be accomplished with local anesthesia and sedation or else with general anesthesia. The internment period is 24 hours. In some cases, it can be on the same day, depending on the surgeon's criterion. The surgical time is from 1 to 2 hours. POST-SURGICAL CARES “ the patient should use a belt to sustain the arms for some days. To reduce the scar, creams will be used. If the patient underwent only a liposuction, normal activities may start as of the 10th day. In case it was isolated braquioplastia or associated to the lipo, only after 20 days. Driving and carrying weight or lifting the arms, only after one month. Sun, only after 90 days.
